Phillips, William

(1878–1968) diplomat; born in Beverly, Mass. His long diplomatic career (1905–49) included assignments with both the Foreign Service and the State Department. He was ambassador to Italy (1936–40) and wartime ambassador to India (1942–44) (where he was not allowed to meet with Gandhi). He was a pivotal member of the Anglo-American Committee on Palestine (1946) and he wrote his memoirs, Ventures in Diplomacy (1952).
