pseudoepidemic

pseudoepidemic

An outbreak, usually in a closed community or an institution, of a disorder with no demonstrable physical cause. Pseudoepidemics are probably a form of HYSTERIA induced by group suggestibility and the conviction that the condition is contagious. As a rule the symptoms are vague and minor. This term is an example of what happens when words are coined without regard to the etymology of their constituents. ‘Epidemic’ means ‘among the people’ so there is nothing ‘pseudo’ about such outbreaks.
