Vize Island


Vize Island

 

an island in the northern part of the Karskoe Sea. Area, 288 sq km; elevation, up to 22 m. It is composed of ocean sands and clays. It is covered by sparse arctic tundra vegetation. The expedition on the steamship Georgii Sedov discovered the island in 1930 and named it in honor of the Soviet arctic researcher V. lu. Vize, who theoretically predicted the existence of this island in 1924.
