Vize, Vladimir Iul’evich

Born Feb. 21 (Mar. 5), 1886, in Tsarskoe Selo, presently the city of Pushkin; died Feb. 19, 1954, in Leningrad. Soviet scientist and arctic explorer. Cor-responding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1933). Worked at the Arctic Institute from 1928; professor at Leningrad State University from 1945.

From 1912 to 1914, Vize was a member of la. Sedov’s expedition. In 1921-22 he was a member of the expedition on the Taimyr and in 1924, 1928, and 1931, of the expeditions on the Malygin. He was the scientific director of the expeditions on the Georgii Sedov (1930), the Sibiriakov (1932), and the Litka (1934). His major works were devoted to the influence of atmospheric processes and hydrological conditions on the amount of ice in the arctic seas. Vize studied the formation of the climate in the central arctic and the influence of the abundant ice on atmospheric circulation and developed methods of ice forecasting. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1946 and was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals. An island in the Karsk Sea has been named after him, as well as a glacier, cape, and bay on the island of Novaia Zemlia.
