A hemophagocytotic condition seen in immunocompromised–♂:♀ ratio, 1:1 and in non-immunocompromised–♂:♀ ratio, 4:1 subjects, often in a background of DNA virus–eg, CMV, EBV, herpesviruses, and adenovirus and rubella infections; VAHS may accompany brucellosis, candidiasis, leishmaniasis, TB, salmonellosis, GVHD, hemolytic anemia Clinical Hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, pulmonary infiltrates, pancytopenia–with a depleted BM, skin rash DiffDx Lymphoma, malignant histiocytosis, sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, lymphomatoid granulomatosis.
