Steppe Governor-Generalship
Steppe Governor-Generalship
(in Russian, Stepnoe General-Gubernatorstvo), also Steppe Krai, an administrative-territorial unit in the Russian Empire, formed in 1882 from the Akmolinsk, Semipalatinsk, and Semirech’e oblasts. It was created when the West Siberian Governor-Generalship was eliminated as an administrative unit. The administrative center was Omsk. The governor-general of the Steppe Governor-Generalship was also commander of the troops of the Omsk military district and nakaznyi ataman (appointed hetmán) of the Siberian Cossack Host. In 1897, Semirech’e Oblast was again made part of the Turkestan Governor-Generalship. The Steppe Governor-Generalship continued to exist with its two component oblasts, Akmolinsk and Semipalatinsk, until October 1917.
