Somrongsen
the remains of a settlement dating from the end of the Neolithic period in Kampong Chhnang Province, central Cambodia (Kampuchea), southeast of Lake Tonle Sap. Excavations conducted in 1901 and 1921 by the French archaeologist H. Mansuy uncovered animal and fish bones, numerous shells from edible mollusks, polished stone axes, adzes, chisels, and hoe blades (some shouldered), and bone arrowheads and fishhooks. Also found were many fragments of hand-molded clay vessels and various ornaments, including polished stone and shell bracelets, stone, bone, and shell beads, and cylinders made from baked clay and fish vertebrae, which were worn in the ears. According to carbon-14 dating, Somrongsen is 3,230±120 years old (1968).
