Susu

(also Soso), a people living in the coastal regions of the Republic of Guinea, in the administrative regions of Boffa, Fria, Kindia, Dubréka, Conakry, and Forécariah. The Susu number about 415,000 (1970, estimate). Their language belongs to the southern group of Mande languages (Mande-fu). The Susu are rapidly assimilating the neighboring smaller tribes, such as the Baga, Landuma, Nalu, and Mikifore. The majority of Susu are Muslims. The chief occupations are farming (rice, millet, and bananas and pineapples for export) and fishing.
