Sanford was founded (1871) on the site of a trading post established (1837) near old Fort Mellon.2 Industrial town (1990 pop. 20,463), York co., SW Maine, on the Mousam River; inc. 1768. Once a textile manufacturing center, Sanford now has diversified industries. The town includes the unincorporated village of Springvale. Nearby ocean beaches attract summer vacationers. 3 City (1990 pop. 14,475), seat of Lee co., central N.C.; inc. 1874. It is a processing center in a rich agricultural region (tobacco, cotton, grain, sweet potatoes, chickens, cattle, and hogs). The city has a large tobacco market and is also a major brick manufacturer. |
