Tiulin, Iurii Nikolaevich

Born Dec. 14 (26), 1893, in Tallinn; died May 8, 1978, in Moscow. Soviet musicologist, teacher, and composer. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1957); doctor of arts (1973).

Tiulin graduated in 1917 from the composition department of the Petrograd Conservatory and from Petrograd University. From 1925 to 1967 he taught at the Leningrad Conservatory, where he became a professor in 1935. In 1967 he moved to Moscow. From 1970 to 1975 he was a consulting professor at Gnesin’s Music Pedagogic Institute and assumed the same position at the Moscow Conservatory in 1976.

Tiulin was the author of introductory works on music theory and various publications devoted to aspects of operatic dramaturgy, folk music, and musical performance. He also wrote textbooks and numerous articles. In his writings, he takes an innovative approach to the solution of complex problems in contemporary music theory, developing a new school of Soviet music theory.

Tiulin also composed various musical works.
