Tiutchev, Aleksei Ivanovich

 

Born circa 1800; died Jan. 21 (Feb. 2), 1856. Decembrist.

The son of a pomeshchik (feudal landlord) in Orlov Province, Tiutchev joined the Semenovskii Life Guards Regiment in 1815. After the Semenovskii Regiment Uprising in 1820, he was transferred to the Penza Infantry Regiment. In 1825 he joined the Society of the United Slavs, becoming one of the society’s most active members; he played a prominent role in uniting the society with the Southern Society of Decembrists.

In 1826, Tiutchev was sentenced to 20 years at hard labor. He served his term first in Chita and Petrovskii Zavod; in 1835 he was deported to a settlement in Minusinsk Region.
