Tizengauzen, Vasilii Karlovich

 

(Wilhelm Sigismund Tiesenhausen). Born 1781 in Narva; died there Oct. 25 (Nov. 6), 1857. Decembrist; colonel and commander of the Poltava infantry regiment.

In 1824, Tizengauzen joined the Southern Society of Decembrists, but he was not an active member. He inclined toward republican views. Arrested in January 1826, Tizengauzen was sentenced to two years at hard labor. He served his sentence in the Peter and Paul Fortress until 1827 and then in Chita. From 1829 he lived in the settlement of Ialutorovsk, and in 1853 he returned to his homeland.
