Trípolis


Trípolis

(trē`pôlĭs), town (1991 pop. 22,463), capital of Arcadia prefecture, S Greece, in the Peloponnesus. It is a transportation and agricultural center and a summer resort. A variety of light manufactures are produced. Founded c.1467 near the sites of the ancient cities of Mantinea, Pallantium, and Tegea, it was the seat of the Ottoman governors of Morea (the Peloponnesus). The town was devastated (1825) in the Greek War of Independence. It was formerly known as Tripolitza.

, ancient Tripolis, city (1996 est. pop. 300,000), NW Lebanon, on the Mediterranean Sea. Citrus fruits, cotton, and other goods are exported from Tripoli. It has an oil refinery and is the terminus of an oil pipeline from Iraq.
