Tsagareli, Avksentii Antonovich
Born Feb. 9 (21), 1857, in the village of Digomi, in what is now the Georgian SSR; died Aug. 12 (25), 1902, in Tbilisi. Georgian playwright.
Tsagareli studied at an ecclesiastical seminary. He was an actor from 1878 to 1883 and subsequently, until 1899, worked for the Transcaucasian Railroad. During the last years of his life he was a director at the Tbilisi People’s Theater.
One of the finest representatives of the realistic drama, Tsagareli wrote such popular comedies of everyday life as Other Times Now (staged 1879, published 1884), Khanuma (staged 1882, published 1884), Tsimbireli (1886), and You Will Leave With What You Came With (staged 1902). Tsagareli was a master of witty dialogue and comic situations.
