Phororhacos

Phororhacos

 

(also Phorusrhacos), a genus of extinct running birds of the order Phororhaciformes, possibly related to the cranes. Members of the genus were very large, measuring as much as 3 m in height. They had a massive skull, a powerful bill, well-developed legs, and reduced wings. The birds were predators. The genus comprised approximately ten species. Remains are known from Oligocene and Pliocene deposits in Argentina.
