San José de Mayo

 

a city in southern Uruguay and capital of the department of San José; situated on the right bank of the San José River. Population, 27,500 (1963). San José de Mayo has a railroad station. It is the commercial center of an agricultural region noted for the raising of livestock and the cultivation of cereals and fruits. It also has milling enterprises. San José de Mayo was founded in 1783.
