a city in the German Democratic Republic on the southern border of the Thuringian Forest in the Suhl District. Population, 29,800 (1970). The city is an old toy-manufacturing center. Toy production developed in the 17th century. Sonneberg is also noted for its electrical engineering and ceramics industry and for the production of plastics, large clocks, and educational aids in anatomy. The city has an astronomical observatory and a toy museum.
