Established: 1930.
Location:South-central California, about 90 miles east of San Diego.
Facilities:Visitor center, viewing sites, hiking trail, picnic area.
Activities:Hiking, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:At 228 feet below sea level, Salton Sea is one of the lowest spots in the United States. It is a wintering area for waterfowl and other waterbirds, with peak populations in December and January.
Habitats: 35,484 acres of salt marsh and open water and 2,000 acres of pasture and freshwater marsh.
Access: Open sunrise to sunset.
Wild life: Canada geese, snow geese, fulvous whistling duck, wood stork, long-billed curley, mountain plover, western snowy plover, burrowing owl, white-faced ibis. Also provides habitat for the endangered Yuma clapper rail.
