Vauli Piettomin
Years of birth and death unknown. Leader of the uprising of the Nentsi poor during the 1830’s and 1840’s; a Nenets of the lower tundra of the Taz River (now Yamal-Nenets Okrug of Tiumen’ Oblast).
Leading an armed detachment, Vauli Piettomin waged a struggle against the local princelings, wealthy reindeer-breeders, merchants, and tsarist officials. In January 1841 he approached Obdorsk with a detachment of 400 fighting men. Along with his closest comrades, he was taken prisoner through deceitful means. They were exiled at hard labor to Eastern Siberia, where Vauli Piettomin died.
