Stereoautographs are used to obtain topographic maps, diagrams, and profiles through photographs from terrestrial surveys using phototheodolites. They consist of a stereocomparator, a system of intersecting rods, a base device, and a plotting device (coordinatograph). The base device is connected to carriages for the photographs and to the observation system of the stereocomparator through the intersecting rods. With movement of the base device, on which the value of the base of projection is set up, the photographs and part of the observation system of the stereocomparator are displaced relative to the stationary marks.

In most models of stereoautographs, the intersecting rods move only in the XY plane (plane intersection), but there are also models having spatial intersection, for example, the compact stereoautograph.
