phospholipase C[‚fäs·fə′lī‚pās ¦sē] (biochemistry) A widely distributed enzyme of considerable physiological significance that hydrolyzes phospholipids at the phosphodiester bond to produce diacylglycerol and a phosphorylated head group, as found in phosphocholine or phosphoinositol. phos·pho·lip·ase CClostridium welchii α-toxin; C. oedematiens β- and γ-toxins; an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine (and possibly other phospholipids) to produce choline phosphate and 1,2-diacylglycerol; also acts on sphingomyelin; a key enzyme in the formation of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate; C. welchii and C. oedematiens β- and γ- toxins all have phospholipase C activity.
