Routinely brushing and flossing the teeth during the day and at bedtime can help avoid dental caries and periodontal disease. Some patients may need instruction in the proper procedure for cleaning the teeth and removing debris and plaque, or they may need assistance in devising ways to cope with physical disabilities that make good oral hygiene difficult for them. Patients who are unconscious or unable to perform self-care activities should have mouth care as often as needed to keep the mouth clean and moist and avoid aspiration of debris and infectious microorganisms. n. The membrane that extends from the margin of the bony shelf of the cochlea to its outer wall and on which the sensory cells of the organ of Corti rest.

basilar membrane

A layer of fibrous tissue in the cochlea of the inner ear, which is divided into a thin inner portion, the zona arcuata, which supports the organ of Corti, and a thicker, striated outer layer, the zona pectinata. The movement of the BM relative to the tectorial membrane in response to sound leads to deflection of the inner and outer hair cells, generating an influx of K+ ions through channels at the tip links of the stereocilia, producing an electrical signal that is transmitted through nerve fibres and the spiral ganglion to the cochlear nerve and the auditory cortex.
