A gene on chromosome 19p13.2 that encodes a member of the Dbl family of guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEF) for the Rho family of GTP-binding proteins, which is important in haematopoiesis, playing a role in T-cell and B-cell development, differentiation, proliferation and activation. VAV1 is specific binding partner of Nef proteins from HIV-1; coexpression and binding of its partners initiates morphologic changes, cytoskeletal rearrangements and unleashes the JNK/SAPK-signalling cascade, upregulating viral transcription and replication.
