Vavilov, Mikhail

Born June 6 (18), 1886, in the city of Efremov, now in Tula Oblast; died Dec. 31, 1951, in Moscow. Soviet scholar in the area of the organization of construction and of the technology of building production; doctor of technical sciences (1944); professor (1946).

After graduating from the St. Petersburg Technological Institute in 1910, Vavilov worked as an engineer on railroad construction and on transport and industrial installations. His main works deal with organization and planning in the construction of industrial enterprises, building under winter conditions, and the erection of buildings using sliding forms. Under Vavilov’s direction, the foundations for a new scientific discipline were laid (1931-36); its basis was the organization of construction using a technology of building production whose main principle is the year-round line production of construction works.
