Suvorov, Evgenii Konstantinovich

Born Jan. 14 (26), 1880, in St. Petersburg; died Dec. 30, 1953. Soviet zoologist; specialist in ichthyology and fish culture.

Suvorov graduated from St. Petersburg University in 1903. From 1921 to 1931 he served as director of the Polytechnic Institute of Fish Culture in Leningrad, which had been organized under his leadership. In 1931 he became a professor at Leningrad University, where he served as head of a subdepartment from 1949 to 1952. Beginning in 1904, Suvorov participated in and later directed expeditions to study fish biology and fishing in the Caspian, White, and Baltic seas, the waters of the Far East, and inland waters. The expeditions discovered new fishing regions, introduced efficient methods of catching and processing fish, and developed measures for the protection of marine animals, such as the northern fur seal and the sea otter. In the area of commercial fishing research Suvorov was the first in Russia to make use of determinations of age distributions in school’s of fish and the rate of fish growth (1908). He also introduced the artificial breeding of Atlantic salmon (1920).
