Sonsonate
(sōnsōnä`tā), city (1993 pop. 46,101), capital of Sonsonate dept., SW El Salvador. It is the commercial center of a rich agricultural region, where cacao, coffee, sugar, tobacco, Peruvian balsam, and subsistence crops are produced. The city was founded in 1524 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de AlvaradoAlvarado, Pedro de, 1486–1541, Spanish conquistador. He went to Hispaniola (1510), sailed in the expedition (1518) of Juan de Grijalva, and was the chief lieutenant of Hernán Cortés in the conquest of Mexico.

It has enterprises for the production of foodstuffs, leather, and tobacco goods and the processing of balsam of Peru. Sonsonate was founded in 1524.
