San Sebastián, Pact of 1930

San Sebastián, Pact of (1930)

an agreement among Spanish republican parties to form an alliance in the struggle against the monarchy; concluded Aug. 17, 1930, in San Sebastián, at an underground conference of the leaders of eight republican parties. The conferees established the Revolutionary Committee to prepare the overthrow of the monarchy. In October 1930 the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party endorsed the Pact of San Sebastián. On Apr. 14, 1931, when Spain was declared a republic, the Revolutionary Committee was transformed into the Provisional Government of the Spanish Republic. The pact was of little relevance after September 1933, when the left-republican parties (Republican Action Party and the Radical-Socialist Party) broke with the Socialist Workers’ Party.
