It is a communications and commercial center located on major rail and highway junctions; it also has an airport. Cattle raising was the traditional industry until the 19th cent., when sugarcane became important. Tobacco processing and trading are carried on there. Santa Clara was founded in 1689. A railroad and highway junction, Santa Clara is the commercial center of an agricultural region growing primarily sugarcane and tobacco. It has a tobacco factory and enterprises producing wine and textiles. There are also plants for the manufacture of refrigerators, gas stoves, and spare parts for agricultural machinery.

The Central University of Villa Clara is located in Santa Clara. There are sugar refineries in the surrounding region. The city was founded in the 17th century.
