Sterlet

(Acipenser ruthenus), a fish of the family Acipenseri-dae. The body reaches a length of 125 cm and a weight of 16 kg (usually less). The sterlet is found in the rivers in the basin of the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, the Caspian Sea, and the Arctic Ocean (as far east as the Enisei River). The fish has been stocked in the Neman, Zapadnaia Dvina, Onega, Pechora, and Amur rivers, as well as in a number of reservoirs. There are two races—the European and the Siberian. Semimigratory forms occur in the Caspian Sea. Spawning occurs in the spring in fast- flowing waters on pebbly or stony bottoms. Males reach sexual maturity at the age of three to seven years, and females at five to 12 years. Fertility is from 4,000 to 137,000 eggs. The life-span may reach 22 years. The sterlet feeds mainly on insect larvae; in the winter it usually hibernates in a hole. The fish is raised in ponds and lakes.
