Patient discussion about psychiatrist

Q. when my brother was responding well with psychiatrist treatment, why he is changed to the medicines again? My brother is bipolar with manic depression. He was given Emsan to control on his bipolar depression. However due to side effects like excess muscle twitching his medicine was stopped. He was immediately sent to a psychiatric treatment. We found a good and a positive change in him. But his psychiatric treatment is stopped and now he is taking Nardil. When my brother was responding well with the psychiatrist treatment then why he is changed to the medicines again? I feel this is not the correct way.A. Well Rohan… I can understand that you want your brother to be well as soon as possible. You must also understand that treatment for bipolar with the psychotherapy, is as important as the medicines. It is also a very important requirement for the complete treatment to proceed well. Though side effect of all medicines are known to all, so sometimes to reduce the side effect of a medicine it’s stopped and replaced with psychotherapy which also helps in the continuation of the treatment.

Q. I don’t know why doctor stopped the medicine and referred a psychiatrist. My sister is bipolar manic depression and we are taking her for her psychotherapy sessions from past 1 month. We have not found any change as of now. I don’t know why doctor stopped the medicine and referred a psychiatrist. We have to meet our doctor again after 2 months, but I wanted to know before meeting him that would this be of any help without any medicines.A. Perhaps the GP stopped medications and referred your sister to a psychiatrist so that the psychiatrist can give her new medications. Sometimes it is better for a psychiatrist to percsribe medications because they know more about the illness and the effective treatments. If the medications your GP perscribed were not working perhaps he/she thought it better to hand the case over to a psychiatrist. Try to be patient through this process I know it is frusterating. Be there for your sister and be patient with her and her symptoms, in time it will get better. Keep faith.

Q. My brother who is facing high depression, how can a psychiatrist help for that? My brother who is facing high depression is sent to the psychiatrist by a doctor. He was already on some medicines for which he was not responding well. I don’t know what a psychiatrist did, he just asked some questions and that’s it. Doctor takes it as a case of bipolar…..how can a psychiatrist help for that?A. He is doing the right thing seeing the doctor for this. If his treatmen doesn't show improvment in a month or two then seek a new doctor for another opinion. Sometimes it can take a long time to find the right combination of medication to treat bipolar. It took months for my doctor to finally combine the right ones. It will work, just keep trying.
