Tazkereh

an anthology; one of the main types of medieval literary scholarship in Persian- and Turkic-language literatures. The tazkereh dealt only with poetry, examples of which were usually preceded by brief information about the author that was generally superficial, imprecise, and without dates. The material was arranged both geographically and chronologically by dynasties.

The earliest tazkereh, Heart of Hearts, was compiled by Muhammad Owfi Samarqandi in the 1220’s in North India; it contains unique examples of works by early classical poets. The first tazkereh dealing only with contemporary poetry was Alisher Navoi’s anthology A Gathering of Refined Men (1491–92), written in the Old Uzbek language.
