Világos

(now §iria), a fortress and settlement to the northwest of the city of Arad (Banat). During the Revolution of 1848-49 in Hungary, on Aug. 13, 1849, the main forces of the revolutionary troops, headed by A. Görgey, capitulated to the commander of the troops of tsarist Russia, I. F. Paskevich, near Világos.
