Vinberg, Georgii Georgievich
Born May 18 (31), 1905, in St. Petersburg. Soviet hydrobiologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976).
Vinberg graduated from Moscow State University in 1927. From 1934 to 1940 he was head of the laboratory at the Limno-logical Station in Kosino, Moscow Oblast. From 1944 to 1947 he was senior research worker at the Borok Biological Station (now the Institute of the Biology of Inland Waters) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Vinberg was head of the subdepartment of invertebrate zoology at the Byelorussian State University from 1947 to 1967. He became head of the laboratory at the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1967. In 1971 he became president of the All-Union Hydrobiological Society.
Vinberg’s main works deal with the theory of biological productivity in ecosystems and the primary and secondary products of bodies of water. He founded the ecophysiological school of hydrobiology.
