Walleye Pollock

 

( Theragra chalcogramma), a fish of the family Gadidae. It dwells in the northwestern Pacific Ocean as far south as 30° N lat. Body length, 40–45 cm; weight, up to 1.5 kg. The walleye pollock lives in schools. It reaches sexual maturity in its third or fourth year and spawns intermittently at great depths. The eggs float to the surface. Walleye pollocks feed on small crustaceans and fishes. The annual catch in the northern Pacific is as much as 2.5 million tons. The liver oil obtained from the walleye pollock is richer in vitamins than that from the cod.
