AKAP5

AKAP5

A gene on chromosome 14q21-q24 that encodes a member of the structurally diverse A-kinase anchor protein (AKAP) family, which binds to the regulatory subunit of protein kinase A (PKA), confining the enzyme to discrete locations within the cell. AKAP5 binds to the RII-beta regulatory subunit of PKA, as well as to protein kinase C and the phosphatase calcineurin. It is primarily expressed in the cerebral cortex, may anchor the PKA protein at postsynaptic densities (PSD) and be involved in regulating postsynaptic events; it is also expressed in T cells and may inhibit IL-2 transcription by disrupting calcineurin-dependent dephosphorylation of NFAT.
