Tkhapsaev, Vladimir

Born July 2 (15), 1910, in Ardon, in what is now the Severnaia Osetiia ASSR. Soviet Ossetian actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1960). Member of the CPSU since 1944.

In 1933, Tkhapsaev began his studies at the studio of a Russian theater in Ordzhonikidze, where he joined the Severnaia Osetiia Drama Theater in 1935. As an actor, Tkhapsaev has asserted the heroic forces of life, combining dynamic passion with spiritual purity.

Tkhapsaev’s best roles have included Sarmat in Salamov’s Sarmat and His Sons, Dzambolat in Dzhimiev’s Black Fog, the Governor in Gogol’s The Inspector-General, Egor Bulychov in Gorky’s Egor Bulychov and the Others, General Murav’ev in Chirskov’s The Victors, the title roles in Shakespeare’s Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, and Matthias Klausen in Hauptmann’s Before Sunset.

Tkhapsaev was a deputy to the sixth and ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He has been awarded the K. Khetagurov Prize of the Severnaia Osetiia ASSR (1965), the K. S. Stanislavsky State Prize of the RSFSR (1968), the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
