Santolina

a genus of low-growing evergreen shrubs or subshrubs of the family Compositae. The aromatic leaves are alternate, serrate, and pinnatipartite or pinnatisect. The inflorescences are small terminal heads consisting of numerous yellow or white bisexual disk flowers. The torus has imbricate bracts, and the achenes lack pappus. There are about ten species, distributed predominantly in the Western Mediterranean region. Some species are ornamental. The lavender cotton (S. chamaecyparissus) is a low, silvery-gray, well-branched tomentose subshrub. The plant withstands clipping well and is widely used in gardening.
