Trakhtenberg, Iosif Adol’Fovich

 

Born Jan. 15 (27), 1883, in Melitopol’, now in Zaporozh’e Oblast; died Sept. 5, 1960, in Moscow. Soviet economist specializing in money circulation, credit, and the theory and history of economic crises in capitalist countries. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939).

Trakhtenberg graduated from the University of Tomsk in 1912. He began his teaching career in Kharkov in 1914 and from 1921 to 1949 he taught in various higher educational institutions in Moscow. In 1947 he joined the staff of the Institute of Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Trakhtenberg was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
