shock stall

shock stall

shock stallEffect of shock stall on coefficients of lift and drag.A sudden reduction of the lift and an increase in the drag on an airfoil brought about at high Mach numbers by the airflow separation aft of a shock wave. Severe buffeting caused by a turbulent airflow behind the shock wave may also take place. A shock stall can cause control problems when the aircraft is flying from transonic to supersonic speeds. These adverse effects are a function of the wing's geometry. The use of thin supercritical wing sections and swept-back wings are among the more common effective methods of postponing the shock stall to higher speeds. Also called a buffet boundary.
