Svetlograd

 

(until 1965, the village of Petrovskoe), a city and administrative center of Petrovskoe Raion, Stavropol’ Krai, RSFSR. Located on the Kalaus River, a tributary of the Vostochnyi Manych, 85 km northeast of Stavropol’. Railroad station on the Kavkazskaia-Elista line; terminus of a branch line (68 km long) to the city of Blagodarnyi. Population, 34,000 (1975).

Svetlograd has a factory for the production of textiles and clothing accessories, a meat- and poultry-packing plant, a food-processing combine, a creamery, a winery, a building materials enterprise, and enterprises for servicing the railroad industry. The city also has pedagogical and cultural schools.
