Abu Shakur Balkhi

Balkhi, Abu Shakur

Born 915; year of death unknown. Persian-Tajik poet. Lived in Bukhara.

Balkhi’s greatest work was the Book of Creation (written between 945 and 948). It was conceived as an original didactic encyclopedic poem. (Only fragments and quotations have survived.) It was imbued with motifs of peaceableness, equality of people, and faith in the power of reason and knowledge. Balkhi and Rudaki were the originators of the didactic epos in Farsi literature. The mutaqarib meter in which the Book of Creation was written became compulsory for that genre.
