Ivanov, Sviatoslav Nesterovich

Born Feb. 3(16), 1911, in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, now Gorky. Soviet geologist, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Became a member of the CPSU in 1970.

After graduating in 1932 from the Sverdlovsk Institute of Geological Prospecting, Ivanov worked on the exploration and prospecting of copper deposits in the Urals. From 1940 he directed the laboratory of physical geochemistry at the A.N. Zavaritskii Institute of Geology and Geochemistry of the Urals Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; since 1966 he has been director of the institute and deputy chairman of the Urals Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Ivanov’s main works deal with the regularities of the location of pyrite-type cupreous deposits. He showed the similarity of the origin of these deposits and ancient submarine volcanic structures. He established the concept of the period and reasons for greenstone metamorphism, which in Ivanov’s opinion occurred before the uplifting of the sea floor and before the formation, in the volcanic region, of mountain structures connected with the intrusion of granite batholiths. He won the State Prize of the USSR in 1949 and has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and medals.
