SaponiteenUKsaponite[′sap·ə‚nīt]Saponitea mineral, a phyllosilicate of the montmorillonite group; it has the chemical formula NaMg3[AlSi3O10]-(OH)2•4H20. Saponite contains Fe as an isomorphic admixture and, sometimes, Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, and Li. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It is found in earthy, clayey or dense, cryptocrystalline masses. When wet, the deposits are soft and oily to the touch; when dry, they are hard and friable. The color is white, yellowish, or reddish. Dry saponite has a hardness of 2.5 on Mohs’ scale, and its density ranges from 2,240 to 2,300 kg/m3. Saponite is formed during the erosion of magnesium minerals of ultrabasic rocks (serpentinites).
