[′sap·ə‚nīt] (mineralogy) A soft, soapy, white or light-buff to bluish or reddish trioctahedral montmorillonitic clay mineral consisting of hydrous magnesium aluminosilicate and occurring in masses in serpentine and basaltic rocks. Also known as bowlingite; mountain soap; piotine; soapstone.

a mineral, a phyllosilicate of the montmorillonite group; it has the chemical formula NaMg3[AlSi3O10]-(OH)2•4H20. Saponite contains Fe as an isomorphic admixture and, sometimes, Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, and Li. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system. It is found in earthy, clayey or dense, cryptocrystalline masses. When wet, the deposits are soft and oily to the touch; when dry, they are hard and friable. The color is white, yellowish, or reddish. Dry saponite has a hardness of 2.5 on Mohs’ scale, and its density ranges from 2,240 to 2,300 kg/m3. Saponite is formed during the erosion of magnesium minerals of ultrabasic rocks (serpentinites). It has the properties of bentonites (see alsoBLEACHING CLAYS).,
