(sərī`), former city, S European Russia, near present-day Volgograd. Founded in 1241 by Batu Khan, it was (13th–15th cent.) the capital of the Tatar Golden HordeGolden Horde, Empire of the,Mongol state comprising most of Russia, given as an appanage to Jenghiz Khan's oldest son, Juchi, and actually conquered and founded in the mid-13th cent. by Juchi's son, Batu Khan, after the Mongol or Tatar (see Tatars) conquest of Russia.

an urban-type settlement and administrative center of Sarai Raion, Riazan’ Oblast, RSFSR. Sarai is situated on the Verda River (Oka River basin), near the Verda railroad station on the Riazhsk-Penza line, 182 km southeast of Riazan’. It has a hemp-processing plant, a plant for the production of asphalt, a brickyard, and a milk combine. It also has a sovkhoz for fattening livestock.
