Stevens, Phineas,
1707–56, American colonial soldier, b. Sudbury, Mass. He moved with his family to Rutland (now Rutland, Vt.) and in 1723 was captured and imprisoned by the St. Francis Indians. Upon his release he settled in Township No. 4 (now Charlestown, N.H.) and defended it (1746–47) against French and Native American attacks in King George's War. Gov. William ShirleyShirley, William,1694–1771, colonial governor in British North America, b. England. He became a lawyer and in 1731 emigrated to Massachusetts. In 1741 he became governor of Massachusetts.
