Stewart, river, 331 mi (533 km) long, rising in the Mackenzie Mts., central Yukon, Canada, and flowing generally W to the Yukon River S of Dawson. The river is navigable for most of its length and is a transportation route for lead ore from its upper reaches. It was explored (1850) by Robert Campbell of the Hudson's Bay Company.Stewart an island in the Pacific Ocean, south of New Zealand. Part of New Zealand. Separated from South Island by the Foveaux Strait. Area, 1,742 sq km. Population, 414 (1971). Stewart Island is composed of metamorphic rocks and of granites. It rises to a maximum elevation of 978 m. The island has a temperate maritime climate and is covered with deciduous and coniferous forests and marshes. The population engages in fishing.
