Stewart, Balfour

Stewart, Balfour (1827–1887)

(religion, spiritualism, and occult)

Balfour Stewart was Professor of Natural Philosophy at Owens College in Manchester, England. He received the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society for his discovery of the law of equality between the absorptive and radiative powers of bodies. He was President of the Society for Psychical Research from 1885 to 1887, and joint author, with Professor Tait, of The Unseen Universe. This book created a stir in scientific circles since it was the first serious scientific attempt to oppose a spiritual view of the universe to the prevailing materialistic one.
