Soshestvenskii, Nikolai Aleksandrovich

Born Oct. 26 (Nov. 7), 1876, in Eksarka, now Viazovka, Saratov Oblast; died Jan. 18,1941, in Moscow. Soviet veterinary pharmacologist and toxicologist. Professor (1916) and doctor of veterinary sciences (1934). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1930). Member of the CPSU from 1940.

Soshestvenskii graduated from the Kazan Veterinary Institute in 1906, after which he worked there until 1920. In 1921 he organized and was appointed head of the subdepartment of pharmacology at the Moscow Zooveterinary Institute (now the K. I. Skriabin Moscow Veterinary Academy), where he worked until his death.

Soshestvenskii’s principal works dealt with the effects produced on animals by sulfur dioxide, chlorine preparations, carbon tetrachloride, and chemical-warfare agents. He formulated a theory on the mechanisms of action of poisonous substances. Soshestvenskii organized a department of pharmacology at the All-Union Institute of Experimental Veterinary Medicine and at the All-Union Institute of Experimental Endocrinology. He also established a military veterinary chemical laboratory.

Soshestvenskii was awarded the Order of the Red Star.
