Sarcosine
sarcosine[′sär·kə‚sēn] (organic chemistry) CH3NHCH2COOH Sweet-tasting, deliquescent crystals; soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol; decomposes at 210-215°C; used in toothpaste manufacture. Also known as methyl glycocol. Sarcosine (also N-methylglycine), CH3NHCH2COOH, a methyl derivative of the amino acid glycine. It is an intermediate metabolic product, serving in the body as a source of methyl groups in transmethylation reactions. Sarcosine is a component of creatine in the muscles and of the group of antibiotics called actinomycins. sarcosine
sarcosine [sahr´ko-sēn] an amino acid occurring as an intermediate in the metabolism of choline in the kidney and liver; it is normally not detectable in human blood or urine.sar·co·sine (Sar), (sar'kō-sēn), N-Methylglycine; an intermediate in the metabolism of choline; it can donate a methyl group to tetrahydrofolate, yielding N5,N10-methylenetetrahydrofolate; demethylation by sarcosine dehydrogenase yields formaldehyde, glycine, and a reduced acceptor; elevated in certain inherited disorders.sarcosine (sär′kə-sēn′, -sĭn)n.
