St. Helens

 

a city in Great Britain, in Merseyside. Population, 104,000 (1971). St. Helens is located close to the Lancashire coal basin, near a deposit of glass sands. Various kinds of glass are produced on a large scale; two-thirds of the local work force is employed in the glass industry. The city has chemical enterprises and enterprises engaged in nonferrous metallurgy and machine building.
